Growing up, billboards were a form of nonverbal communication when driving through the South. Determining the nature of the area you were in was as easy as catching a glance of one of the dozens of billboards lining the desolate roadsides across rural Georgia and South Carolina.

Today, billboards can say almost anything — as long as someone is footing the bill, it’s probably on a billboard somewhere. Here’s are some of the most interesting signs from across the country:

7. The Big Mac Upstairs

If you’re from the south, you’ll know rural areas are practically paved with religious billboards. However, they are also paved with McDonald's advertisements. Combined, these two create a hilarious pair.

6. Not nuts for nut milk

Defining milk has become a hotly debated topic amongst dairy farmers facing a serious threat against alternative milks. These giant black billboards with white, block lettering are common around the Coastal Georgia region and are thought to be sponsored by local dairy farmers.

5. Florida roadside attractions were always — interesting.

Nothing say “The South” like pecan, peanut brittle, live baby gators, and free juice. Found across Florida, these roadside attractions were a hallmark of any long road trip through the rural, coastal South. Bonus points if you were dragged to one of these places by your parents.

4. The only sign Cheech and Chong need.

And on your left, legal mary jane is coming up quick. This sign serves as not only an advertisement, but a useful mile marker for some. A tech company serving the cannabis industry, Weedmaps knows how to get visitors across state lines and into dispensaries.

3. An alien cash cow?

Do you remember when millennials were responsible for planning a raid of a government entity? I sure do. Storming Area 51 was an internet phenomena where a small group of people created a Facebook group, ‘Storm Area 51, They Can’t Stop All of Us,’ that trolled the internet in 2019. Although very few people turned out for the event, I’m sure this wasn’t the only law firm hoping to cash in on the viral craze.

2. Kansas City Chiefs Get Poetic

The fans of the Kansas City Chiefs, or the Red Kingdom, are serious about their sports. With their own song, I have no doubt that any Chief’s fan will gladly bleed red for their team — literally or figuratively.

1. Location, location, location.

Oh my God it’s… Scrat from Ice Age? Sometimes a good billboard can turn ugly without thorough planning. The unfortunate placement of these two signs are sending a pretty clear message, however: Even Prehistoric squirrels are no match for Jason Bourne.

Finding hilarious billboards was practically a sport for my sister and I during road trips when we were kids. I’m so happy I got to share some of my favorite finds with you all. As always, thank you for reading!
